EHS Field Notes shares practical experience from working in environmental, health and safety. It’s meant to help you think through problems and build programs you can run yourself. It isn’t a substitute for your own judgment, professional advice, or the regulations themselves.
My views are my own
Everything here is my personal opinion and experience. It doesn’t represent my current or past employers, their clients, or any professional organization I belong to. Examples are generalized or changed so they don’t identify any company, organizations, site or person.
This is education, not professional advice
The content on this site is for general information only. It isn’t:
- Legal advice. I’m not an attorney.
- An engineering certification or a stamped design.
- An official interpretation of any regulation by Cal/OSHA, federal OSHA, EPA, DTSC, a Regional Water Board, an air district or any other agency.
- A compliance determination for your facility.
Every site is different. A control that works in one plant can be wrong or dangerous in another. Before you act on anything you read here, check it against the current regulation, your permits and the manufacturer’s requirements, and talk to a qualified professional who has assessed your operation.
Regulations change
Standards, permit conditions and agency guidance change often, and they vary by state, county and air district. Posts are accurate to the best of my knowledge on the date they’re published. I don’t promise to update older posts. Always go to the primary source.
No professional relationship
Reading this site, commenting, or emailing me doesn’t create a consulting, employment or professional relationship. Any consulting work happens only under a separate written agreement that defines the scope, the deliverables and the terms.
How I use AI
Some content, templates and analysis examples are built with AI tools. I review everything before it’s published, and my professional judgment is the final check, but AI output can be wrong. Treat it the way you’d treat any other reference.
Templates, tools and downloads
Checklists, templates and calculators are starting points. Adapt them to your site, your hazards and your regulatory requirements. Using one doesn’t mean you’re compliant.
Outside links
I link to agency sites, standards and other resources I find useful. I don’t control that content and I’m not responsible for it. A link doesn’t mean I endorse it.
Limitation of liability
You use the information on this site at your own risk. To the extent the law allows, I’m not liable for any loss, injury, citation, penalty or damage that comes from relying on it.
Questions or corrections
If you find an error or something out of date, tell me. Corrections make the site better for everyone.
